Shimura Shinpachi (志村 新八, Shimura Shinpachi) is a member of the Yorozuya, a samurai in training, and one of the three main protagonists of Gintama. He is one of the more normal characters of the series, delivering the requisite reality-checks or punchlines against other characters' antics. Other than working at the Yorozuya, Shinpachi is also the leader of Terakado Tsuu's fanclub: Terakado Tsuu's Imperial Guards.

Background[edit | edit source]
Shinpachi grew up with his sister Shimura Tae and his father Shimura Ken in their family dojo Koudoukan. Their father died when they were young, leaving them to take care of the dojo and the debt to the Loan Shark Amanto. At his local temple school, Shinpachi befriended Takachin. When Takachin was bullied by other children, Shinpachi tried to help but ended getting beaten up as well until Otae saved them. They were close friends until Takachin accidentally soiled himself while Shinpachi pretended to be sleeping to avoid helping Takachin.
Shinpachi would later become acquainted with Yagyuu Kyuubei due to his sister's friendship with her. When the debt collectors tried to harm Tae and her brother, Shinpachi was knocked out by the time Kyuubei came to help them, although it cost her her left eye. Shinpachi mentioned that he ate his sister's cooking when he was younger, which made his eyesight go bad and resulted in his need to wear glasses. While working at a café and being beaten by the manager behind the shop, Shinpachi encountered Terakado Tsuu during one of her street performances. Although he didn't understand her song, he was emotionally moved. After gaining encouragement and motivation from this encounter, Shinpachi would create the Terakado Tsuu fanclub: Terakado Tsuu's Imperial Guards.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Shinpachi has black hair and brown eyes. He wears a light blue keikogi with blue linings and a blue hakama. Many other characters have pointed out that Shinpachi's glasses are his charm point. Sakata Gintoki even went as far as to say that Shinpachi's glasses make out 95% of him and that they are more Shinpachi than Shinpachi himself, with the rest being 3% water and 2% garbage. His poor eyesight is supposedly caused by chronic ingestion of dark materials (egg) cooked by his beloved elder sister, Otae.
Throughout the series, he is seen wearing various disguises and has been shown in different styles for gags.

Personality[edit | edit source]
Shinpachi is best known for his Tsukkomi (being a straight man) when other people especially Gintoki or Kagura say or do idiotic things, which happens very often. He is frequently teased by Sakata Gintoki, his supposed employer, and later on by Yagyuu Kyuubei for having a 'sister-complex' because of his attachment towards his sister. Since he doesn't have as much physical strength as Kagura, he is often bullied by her, who often tends to literally give him a thrashing. He takes charge of all the household chores in the Yorozuya due to his 'inclination to care for other people' (as he explained during the Goukon in Episode 88). He also likes to save leftovers, bringing Tupperware to store the food and is called 'domestic' because of it.
All of the above points, combined with his plain bespectacled look has made him the archetypical downtrodden nerdy character. Shinpachi is also a rabid fan of fictional pop-idol Terakado Tsuu, and often gets so moved by her songs that he starts crying listening to them. He is the strict leader of the Terakado Tsuu's Imperial Guards, a fan club with deep admiration and devotion to her, and has made 99 regulations that he makes sure the members loyally follow. Whenever someone breaks one of the rules and regulations of the fanclub, he personally issues their punishment with a flying nose-hook. Most of the time, the Sergeant is on the receiving end. Shinpachi himself has been shown to break some of the regulations that he punishes others for doing the same.
Shinpachi also likes to sing, and has been seen singing karaoke-versions of various songs by Tsuu, but is completely tone-deaf.
Strength & Abilities[edit | edit source]
He has limited dojo training, but inherited a dojo together with his older sister Shimura Tae called Koudoukan (恒道館), specializing in the Tendoumushin sword-fighting style (天堂無心流, Tendou Mushin Ryuu).
Although Shinpachi's fighting abilities are not as powerful as that of his two friends (Kagura with her monstrous Yato strength and Gintoki with his sword mastery), and is joked that his combat ability was merely two Kelp above normal human; in truth, he is still stronger than average swordsmen and can fight alongside with others in battles without being only a burden to them. He grew a lot stronger over the years and also finally gained actual combat experience, which he lacked according to Takechi Henpeita. Sorachi himself had stated that Shinpachi is pretty skilled, the reason for not being obvious is because he is always surrounded by "monsters" and is often not the main fighter in the group.
He has been shown to be able to fight with not only his sword, but using hand-to-hand combat in a boxing match, and also using his intelligence; as seen when he was able to knock back Kyuubei and beat her grandfather, winning the game against the Yagyuu clan, when he figured out a way to get past Tosshi's human wall, and when he fought with Tosshi in a boxing match.
In Episode 213, he defeated Chin Pirako who was a feared and extremely skilled swordsman herself, in two blows, proving how strong he became. He also defeated Obi Hajime in a deathmatch, causing Hajime to admit that Shinpachi has become a strong warrior.
In the manga, by Lesson 422, he is strong enough to knock down 2 members of the giant clan with a single kick (knocking one out), albeit with a surprise attack. Each member of the giant clan is big and strong enough to knock over buildings with a single blow. Once again, as Sorachi said, his contribution is made insignificant next to his monster allies, as Gintoki and Umibozou annihilate an entire invading force of the Giants that were preparing to eradicate the human race.
On a recurring note, as the series progresses, every time there is one of the trademark fights against hordes of enemies, Shinpachi without fail will defeat several dozen, or even hundreds of mob class enemies without much difficulty. By chapter 500 of the manga, even elite special ops units are treated like fodder to him.
In addition to his skill with the sword, he has also been seen using the powerful nose hook technique that is used by several characters in the series, and possibly even invented it.
At some point in the series, he switches from using a katana to using a bokuto like Gintoki. This seems to coincide with his growth in strength and skill, as he casually defeats elite fighters armed with live steel with his bokuto.
His combat ability drastically changes depending on whether or not he is wearing his glasses, as he has very poor eyesight. Just like Sa-chan, his poor eyesight makes it impossible for him to fight against decent combatants. This seems to change as the series progresses.
5 years in the future, Shinpachi seems to have caught up to Kagura and (past) Gin in fighting ability, in the 2nd Gintama movie.
Relationships[edit | edit source]
Family[edit | edit source]
- Shimura Tae: Shinpachi's older sister. They care about each other very much to the point that Gintoki says Shinpachi has a sister complex.
- Shimura Ken: Shinpachi's father. When they were young Shinpachi & her older sister Shimura Tae were always getting punished by their father for fooling around.
Mentor[edit | edit source]
- Obi Hajime: He was the former chief coach of the Koudoukan. He was like an older brother to Shinpachi and Otae. He went missing before Shinpachi met Gintoki traveling around the Galaxy.
- Sakata Gintoki: Shinpachi follows Gintoki with admiration for him in order to learn the way of the samurai, which leads him to work in Yorozuya. He quite regrets following him because of Gintoki's irresponsibility for everything, but at the same time, they started to have adventures which lead Shinpachi to start considering him as a mentor and brother. He even got mad at Gintoki when he didn't consider him as a brother when Gintoki told Umibouzu about not having a family. Gintoki is the only person he would listen to whenever he refuses to listen to his sister. During the Guardian Dog Arc, he said to Nakamura Kyoujirou that he considered Gintoki as a family.
Friends and Allies[edit | edit source]
- Kagura : Kagura is close to Shinpachi even though she beats him or offends him often. However, they both care for each other very deeply as comrades as even though they have their differences they would always help each other when they need it and they have the common care and respect for Gintoki.
- Yagyuu Kyuubei: Shinpachi and Kyuubei are friends due to the fact that the latter is friends with Otae.
- Kondou Isao: Shinpachi views him as an annoying stalker and most of the time he would prefer having Gintoki as a brother-in-law rather than Kondou. Just as Kagura and Gintoki share parallels with Okita and Hijikata, Shinpachi and Kondou seem to share is the softer ones of the trio and often the butt of their jokes.
- Katsura Kotarou: They are very respectful to each other, but at times Shinpachi wonders about Katsura's lack of common sense. Just like the other members of Yorozuya, he does seek advice from Katsura every once in a while.
- Taka-Chin: Taka-chin is Shinpachi's childhood friend from temple school. They managed to reconcile after Shinpachi saved him from his old biker gang. He has become a member of Terakada Tsu's Imperial Guard, of which Shinpachi is a captain of.
- Yamazaki Sagaru: They both share being the plain characters as well as the straight man in many situations. They are often opponents when the Yorozuya goes against the Shinsengumi.
- Okita Sougo: Unlike most of the other people who become his torturing victims, Sougo had a respect for him as most of other Shinsengumi, as shown during pen pal arc. This could be because Kondou has instructed the Shinsengumi to be nice to Shinpachi.
- Takechi Henpeita: Shinpachi once fought Henpeita during the Benizakura Arc to clear Katsura a path. They've become allies during the Choshu War in order to protect Shige Shige, but this was a set up by Tendoshu and Nobu Nobu.
- Abuto: When Kagura was overwhelmed by Abuto during their battle, Shinpachi tried to help Kagura but was easily defeated. Later, he and Kagura were saved by Abuto from falling. They later became allies in the near end of the Shogun Assassination arc.
Love Interest[edit | edit source]
- Otsu: Otsu was girl meet on the streets performing that he met during the times he was looking for a job before meeting with Gintoki. He started to like her songs as far to create a fan club for her.
- Kirara: They became penpals after Shinpachi found her message in a bottle near the beach.
- Pandemonium: Pandemonium larvae are snacks for Shikigami. Shinpachi fell in love with one of the grotesque creatures after their lips accidentally met. He sees only a beautiful face of a lady on the disgusting larva. Pandemonium was chomped by a Shirino Clan's Shikigami. Pandemonium was later seen in Satan Festival where Shinpachi once again fell in love with the larva. This time Pandemonium was crushed by Gedoumaru who was irritated by Shinpachi's idiotic behavior.
- Anigasaki Momo: A game character from Love Choris, Shinpachi chose her due to his taste of older sister type.
Enemies[edit | edit source]
- Eromes: Eromes tricked Shinpachi into thinking she is interested in him to steal his wallet.
- Hitotsubashi Nobu Nobu: After what the tyrant did to Shinpachi's sister while she opposed against the tyrant's regime for killing an innocent people heartlessly since the day after he sold his humanity to Tendoshu, letting the assassination attempt on Shige Shige, Shinsengumi being disbanded and at the same time Kondo and Matsudaira are about to be executed five days later, Shinpachi hated they way how Nobu Nobu treated, at a time when he’s still a pawn Tendoshu and Utsuro, until they betrayed the last shogun and deem him to have no use of them anymore.
Story[edit | edit source]
Shinpachi would soon start working at the register in a café, but only having known the way of the sword, he made a lot of mistakes. Some Amanto who were there as customers, tripped him over so he spilled Gintoki's chocolate parfait. Enraged by this, Gintoki attacked the Amanto and fled the scene, leaving his wooden sword and the blame with Shinpachi. Shinpachi followed him and they would soon encounter Tae, who brought them back to the dojo. Debt collectors then came along and took Tae with them so she could start working in an illegal flying nightclub. However, after a series of events, the nightclub crashed into the ocean, Tae was rescued by Shinpachi with help from Gintoki and the debt collectors went to jail, as stated by Gintoki in episode 3. This led Tae to give her "permission" for Shinpachi to join the Yorozuya, after which he would become a regular member, share many exploits and do various jobs with Sakata Gintoki and Kagura.
The Yorozuya is trying to search for a missing person in a club where they suspect the missing person frequently comes. While Gintoki is in the bathroom because of his hangover, Kagura asked Shinpachi if they can just fool the client by bringing in a stranger, but the stranger passes out. The bartender suggests that he should have been taking the latest recreational drug.
As they further investigate, a group of pirates from the Harusame suspects Shinpachi and Kagura are from the Joi Faction because of their actions and they are captured.
In the boat, they are forced to talk where the Joi faction HQ is or Kagura will be killed by the Daraku, even though Shinpachi does not know anything. Kagura does not want to cause more trouble so she kicks Daraku and lets herself fall down the sea.
Fortunately, Katsura and Gintoki come to the rescue. Since Shinpachi and Katsura are both being poisoned they claim they cannot move an inch anymore. Gintoki then offers a piggyback ride them home. Katsura asks Gintoki to good take care of things he treasures as they depart.
Otose calls the Yorozuya to help the neighbors stop a noisy inventor, Gengai. So the Yorozuya prepares a mic and speaker for Shinpachi to sing in a volume loud enough for Gengai to come out. After a while, one of Gengai's robots comes out and they soon manage to get into his garage. They move Gengai's invention to a place that would not disturb the neighbors. But then Gengai needs to fix the robots all over again to prepare them for the coming festival.
At the festival, Kagura and Shinpachi become somewhat attached to robot Saburo until he is called out by Gengai. Shinpachi and Kagura continue to enjoy the festival, meeting Hasegawa and Okita Sougo along the way.
Later on, they learn that Gengai is actually planning his revenge to the Bokufu using the robots. When Gengai tries to attack the Shogun and the Shinsengumi, Shinpachi tries to convince him to stop before Gintoki comes to the scene and finally stops him.
Okita Sougo offers a job to the Yorozuya to track down the champion of Rengokukan, an underground fight club called Kidoumaru. They succeed in finding Kidoumaru, but they also realize that secretly Kidoumaru raises dozens of orphaned children. He no longer wishes to fight and tries to escape with the children. As Rengokukan is actually secretly run by the Amanto, Kidoumaru is killed by the new Rengokukan champion, Onijishi, as he is escaping with the children.
After this, the children ask Yorozuya to avenge their warden's murder as they offer to give away all their toys as payment. The Yorozuya and Okita agree to help and arrive at the scene with masks on their faces. Shinpachi joins the fight with the Rengokukan and is later joined by Hijikata and Shinsengumi.
Kagura and Shinpachi drag an amnesia-stricken Gintoki around town. Kagura and Shinpachi try to restore his memory, almost succeeding for few times, but always returning back to start by outside interference. They meet various characters like Otose, Catherine, Katsura, Sachan, Otae, and Kondou. When their place becomes a crash landing pad for Sakamoto Tatsuma's spaceship, Gintoki encourages them to live on without him and disband the Yorozuya. Despite their attempts to reason with him, Gintoki leaves them behind.
Shinpachi goes to the Yorozuya and finds Kagura there waiting for Gintoki to come home. He feels that Gintoki's memory tree has withered and their existence is like a small branch of the tree, not being able to rustle Gintoki's memories. But Kagura believes that even if she is just one branch in his memory tree, she will still cling and believe in him. After that Shinpachi joins her and waits together for Gintoki's return.
With a tip from Otose, they learn of a "silver-haired worker" in the Justaway factory. Kagura and Shipachi arrive just in time to protect Gintoki from harm along with the Shinsengumi, only to trigger his memories. After Gintoki destroys the cannon that is threatening Edo, Gintoki walks away telling Shinpachi and Kagura that "We are going home".
Shinpachi and Gintoki arrives at the bank to retrieve Kagura while she is attacked by an alien. Umibouzu appears and saves them altogether. As Gintoki plans to let Kagura leave with her father, Shinpachi strongly refuses to the point that he hands in a letter of resignation to Gintoki. He is the only person who tries to persuade Kagura to stay on Earth before the alien attacks again.
Another alien goes haywire upon the Yato's departure, causing Gintoki to rush back and help. After the defeat of the alien, Kagura is given a choice to stay or leave. Shinpachi overhears the discussion between Umibouzu and Gintoki. He then withdraws his resignation letter before stomping off, tears in his eyes.
Katsura approaches the Yorozuya as Elizabeth has gone missing. As the mission likely requires them to infiltrate into a prison, they enlist the help of Sarutobi to train them into ninjas. Shinpachi is the only one who can accomplish Sarutobi's task during the training as he goes unnoticed due to his forgettable appearance. Upon their operation, Shinpachi, Kagura, and Katsura are quickly outclassed by the Shinobi 5. However, as their curry dishes are drugged with laxatives, Shinpachi takes Gou, Shuwa, and Matsuo out rather effortlessly.
Shinpachi alongside the Yorozuya and the witches tries his best in reverting Sadaharu back to normal after it turns into a demon. During this arc, it is revealed that Shinpachi did most work in taking care of Sadaharu.
Together with the Yorozuya, Shinpachi helps Ofusa to reunite with her son.
The Yorozuya tries to locate Hachirou as requested by a mother who travels far from her village in search of her son. They join Takamagahara temporarily during their quest while in the end successfully completed the mission.
Elizabeth approaches the Yorozuya as Katsura has gone missing. Shinpachi is asked to team up with Elizabeth to look for any evidence that may point towards Katsura. They are attacked by Nizou but are promptly saved by Gintoki. During the fight, Gintoki is severely injured, while Shinpachi sliced off Nizou's right arm in a surprise attack.
Shinpachi asks Otae to take care of the injured Gintoki, while he carries on to search for Katsura and Kagura. He is aided by Elizabeth during his infiltration onto Kiheitai's ship. He saves Kagura from being bombed, but is then surrounded by many Kiheitai members. Katsura saves the day eventually, but is quickly beaten by Shinpachi and Kagura due to his sudden disappearance.
In order to eliminate Nizou, the Yorozuya fights together again. Shinpachi duels Takechi, but their fight ceases shortly as Nizou becomes completely overwhelmed and controlled by his sword. Finally, Nizou is defeated by Gintoki and Katsura orders everyone to leave. Despite his unwillingness, Shinpachi is carried away by Elizabeth to safety.
During the rebellion of the robots, Shinpachi is forced to separate with Gintoki and Kagura. He successfully delivers Fuyo No. 0's head to Gengai's warehouse before he himself is being captured. He is then being saved by the Yorozuya, Gengai and Fuyo No. 0. After the incident, he and Kagura run all over the place to collect every bits and pieces related to this event in order to rebuild Fuyo.
The Yorozuya is on a job of fixing a roof and Shinpachi cannot concentrate after noticing his sister's odd and gloomy behavior wondering if there is a man behind this. At first, he suspects it is Kondou Isao who, on the same place, is having an arranged marriage with the Orangutan Planet princess, Bubbles who is a 100% pure gorilla. After receiving their payment, Shinpachi catches a glance that Otae and Kyuubei are kissing. Enraged, Shinpachi attacks Kyuubei but he is taken down easily. It shocks him when his sister suddenly decides to keep her promise to Kyuubei and bids goodbye to everyone while tears flowing from her eyes.
Shinpachi cannot accept Otae's rash actions and decides to come to the Yagyuu household together with Kondou to challenge Kyuubei and bring his sister home. Hijikata, Sougo, Gintoki, and Kagura set in to help, calling themselves the students of the Kodoukan Dojo. Kyuubei shows up and decides to play a game where each member of the parties need to put a plate somewhere on their body. Whoever has a broken plate is out of the game and if the leader's plate broke, that concludes the match.
After choosing Shinpachi as the leader and doing random acts together, the students went separate ways. Shinpachi and Kondou enters the room where Kagura, Sougo, and Nishino Tsukamu once fight. They are surprised to see Sougo defeated as he is an elite fighter. As Shinpachi gets closer to him, he notices a phone at the side and checks on it hoping to find some kind of evidence pointing the responsible. As he opens the phone, he sees an image of Kagura grinning while stepping on Sougo and Nishimaru. As Kondou rants for the person responsible, Shinpachi calmly stands and ferociously stomps on the phone until it shattered into pieces. He gives Kondou a tense look pretending he is mad as well and is seeking revenge. Kondou notices him sweating a lot, but Shinpachi blames the room for being hot and not having an air conditioner.
They continue until they reach the room where Hijikata and Kitaooji Itsuki are having meals at the same table. Right after finishing the meal, Shinpachi and Kondou watch the two as they clash swords through the end in which Hijikata wins. After that, the three of them head to a toilet. As they wait outside, Shinpachi is starting to get worried over Hijikata as he lit a firework thinking it like a cigarette. As soon as they see Kyuubei and Toujou Ayumu coming, they run away, leaving Kondou who is stuck in one of the stalls because the toilet paper rack is empty. Hijikata on the other hand, lets Shinpachi escape as Kyuubei spotted them.
While the others finish their own battles, Shinpachi makes his way to Otae and asks her to run off together. The two share a sister-brother time with Otae expresses her struggle. Shinpachi slaps Otae on the cheek as she is getting more and more stubborn. As it becomes clear that Otae is actually unwilling to get married, Kyuubei brings along a defeated Hijikata.
Eventually, Shinpachi learns of Kyuubei's real gender as well as the reason why Otae wishes to stay. In the past when the Amanto is trying to take over the dojo, Shinpachi, and Otae fight to protect it. Since they are weak and small, Shinpachi is knocked down and Otae is almost being caught. Kyuubei comes to rescue, at the cost of losing her left eye. Shinpachi attacks Kyuubei, and teams up with Gintoki who is fighting Yagyuu Binbokusai. During the fight, Shinpachi's glasses are off. Shinpachi and Gintoki are at a disadvantage as Kyuubei and Binbokusai gang up on them. Kyuubei talks on how Shinpachi is weak and always needs to be protected, keeping Otae making fake smiles. Gintoki retorts that Kyuubei has no right to criticize Shinpachi as she knows nothing about him and she is actually the one whose family tries their best to protect her.
Shinpachi is temporarily knocked down, as Gintoki continues to fight Binbokusai, Kyuubei tries to reach Shinpachi to destroy his plate. He gets his glasses and throws an attack that Kyuubei is forced to defend. The four-fight again with Gintoki defeated Kyuubei but he is then taken down by Binbokusai. At the last moment, Gintoki let go of his sword to Shinpachi, while the latter gives a surprising and accurate attack towards Binbokusai's plate, sealing their victory.
After Shinpachi's victory, Otae is able to go back home, as Kyuubei learns that she should not force Otae into marrying her. Later on, they all attend Kondou and Princess Bubbles' wedding. As Kondou asks for back up, Shinpachi ignores him and keeps putting bananas in a container to take home. Otae arrives in a dramatic entrance as she spears Kondou on the wall and runs away with a wide smile on her face along with Shinpachi and the others.
Shinpachi, as part of the Yorozuya, helps Heiji to hunt down Chougorou.
The Yorozuya visits Hasegawa at the prison while bringing him information from outside. Shinpachi and Kagura investigate Haga's relationship with various women and bring up evidence during the trial. They witness Hasegawa's move Kinniku Buster when they try to spread out the news that Hasegawa is found innocent.
A brand new game console is hitting the streets of Edo— The Owee! Shinpachi together with Gintoki and Kagura try different ways to get ahead of the line. When the time comes, everyone is trying to fetch one. As a public stunt, the Yorozuya and Shinsengumi compete against each other for the Owee. Katsura v.s. Kondo in dating sims and Yamazaki vs Shinpachi in Tetris. The final match is a tag team battle in a role-playing game simulator.
Shinpachi is lost to Yamazaki in the Tetris game and is unknowingly beaten by Gintoki, Kagura, Hijikata, and Okita during the RPG.
Shinpachi meets Hijikata as "Tosshi" in a televised debate between a 2D otaku and a 3D otaku. He takes Hijikata back to see Gintoki, and finds out that Hijikata has been affected by his newly-acquired sword. Meanwhile, the Shinsengumi is falling apart under the plot of Itou Kamotarou and secretly, Kawakami Bansai. Hijikata's original personality comes back again temporarily, and commissions the Yorozuya to save Shinsengumi. After accepting it, the Yorozuya brings Tosshi (and Hijikata) along to save Kondou. During the operation, Shinpachi is asked to drive the car as they hurry to the scene.
The Yorozuya are commissioned by a local gangster to persuade his son out of his room. After a few failed attempts, Shinpachi and Kagura go back home while Gintoki stays. As Gintoki discovers that the son is no longer in the room, he is attacked by the second-in-command Nakamura Kyoujirou. Under the effect of poison, Gintoki loses and falls into the river.
Noticing Gintoki's disappearance, Shinpachi and Kagura visit the gangster home again, just to find out that the gangster has already died due to sickness. They express that Gintoki will not run away from a commission without letting anyone know.
The Yorozuya goes to the beach with the mission to catch a suspicious person, however, instead of finding the guy, they start to look at chicks with binoculars. Kagura catches Kamenashi, a suspicious turtle, videotaping girls in their swimsuit and proceeds to beat him up. They agree on not to take Kamenashi to the police as he would take them to Ryugujo Palace for free.
They go to the sea with a little boat, on the way they see a cruiser which Kyuubei, Otae and a golden turtle are on board. It is revealed that they are also going to Rygujo as they help a turtle Amanto's daughter, Similarly, Hasegawa, Katsura, and Elizabeth are being invited to the Ryugujo as well due to various reasons. A mayhem breaks out as two of the turtle Amantos start attacking each other, they all fall into the sea and get washed ashore onto an island.
Shinpachi wakes up on the shore and saw a skeleton in a cave nearby. He imagines for the worst, but later starts to think positively and strips naked to feel the 'freedom'. He starts to run naked before he meets Hasegawa, who is doing the same. They put on their clothes and start to speak like nothing has happened. Along the way, they find Gintoki practicing Kamehameha, Otae singing B'z songs, Kyuubei protecting a poo-like sand drawing, Kagura fantasizing the presence of Laputa and Katsura doing everything above (except getting nude) while peeing. Excluding Katsura, each of them are extremely embarrassed when they are spotted by Shinpachi and the gang and everyone acts as nothing happened afterward.
Kyuubei and Shinpachi are asked to find shelter. They go to the cave that Shinpachi found earlier and they find Kamenashi there. They are surprised when Kamenashi states that this is the Ryugujo Palace. Hasegawa and Otae come and they enter into the cave. Through TV, they see the people in Edo are getting old and Kamenashi explains that this is the work of Otohime and stated that they are the only ones that can stop her. Turtles appear on the shore and attack them. They try to hold on until Gintoki and Katsura come back. Yet as the two come back as old men, the turtles capture everyone.
In the prison, they start to talk about their strategies and Gintoki is watching Sumo watches with Katsura. They are annoyed by Katsura and Gintoki’s behaviors, especially Gintoki repeating Shinpachi’s sentences, and some turtles appear. They take Otae and leave, making Shinpachi worrying for his sister. Then Kamenashi comes and pushes the guard to the bars to make them take the keys. The turtles attack them but Kyubei and Kagura defeat them.
They go into the palace and Kamenashi tells them to act like turtles, resulting in Kagura and Kyuubei acting like they are going to lay some eggs and Shinpachi has to take care of them. Kamenashi tells everyone that Otohime is doing this to make everyone look ugly, so she can be the most beautiful creature.
Before they go to take Otae back, Kamenashi uses his spouzer to divide their power equally. Shinpachi gets mad because he is only two konbu stronger than normal people despite his 10 years long sword training. The spouzer gets destroyed as Gintoki and Katsura were too much of a burden. The soldiers find them and start to attack. Shinpachi tells them to take one of the old men but Kagura and Kyuubei quickly escape as they do not want to be team up with the burdens. Kamenashi and Hasegawa try to hold the turtles so Shinpachi and others can escape. However, they are too weak to do so, making Shinpachi even angrier. Shinpachi carries Gintoki and Katsura while trying to escape.
After getting away from the soldiers, Shinpachi, Katsura, and Gintoki enter a room and there is a man in a capsule. Katsura sits on the controller and the computer opened, showing Otohime’s journal, mostly about Urashima. After reading the journal, Gintoki asks Zura if he can run straight, and goes off to ‘’rehabilitate a 3000-year-old woman’’. Urashima communicates with Shinpachi through the computer and tells him about the antidote.
Shinpachi catches up with Gintoki and Katsura with the antidote on his shoulder. But their new challenge becomes the stairs, and it is very hard for Katsura and Gintoki. As Hasegawa, Kamenashi, Kyubei, and Kagura try to stop Otohime. they earn them some time. Shinpachi gives Gintoki the antidote and attacks Otohime. The Yorozuya and Otae are asked by Otose to go for a hot spring trip during winter. As they approach the hotel called Senboukyou ran by Oiwa, Gintoki spots a girl walking nearby. Shinpachi notices that girl (Rei) is unlikely human as she does not leave any footprints on the snow. As they enter, Shinpachi and Gintoki notice a lot of ghosty figures while Kagura and Otae are unaware of them. Frightened, Gintoki regards them as 'stands', as in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure which Shinpachi strongly doubts.
Shinpachi and Gintoki originally try to inform Otae and Kagura about the 'stands', but Oiwa threatens to kill them all if they do. They also find that they cannot leave as the road is blocked by an enormous rock. Reluctantly, Shinpachi accompanies the others to the hot spring. He and Gintoki are surrounded by many other 'stands' there and Shinpachi is possessed by one of them, mostly due to Gintoki's carelessness and clumsiness. A possessed Shinpachi is bounded to play Uno with the possessed Otae and Kagura.
Since he is possessed, he cannot work for the hotel like Gintoki, much to Oiwa's dismay. His soul, later on, becomes a 'stand' as well to help Gintoki. Shinpachi and Kagura perform a comedic sketch to the guests, making them happy enough to enter reincarnation as Gintoki sings them a song to bid them goodbye. Shinpachi almost reincarnates as well as he is praised by one of the 'stands'. In the final showdown, they take turns to possess Gintoki to lend their power to him, but Shinpachi is replaced by other 'stands' when it is his turn.
With Rei sacrificing herself, they are all saved from being devoured. They depart after 10 days staying there as Oiwa gives them a farewell.

With the help of Gintoki and the Shinsengumi, Shinpachi writes up the reply and becomes pen-pal with Urara. Eventually, a date is set up between him and his pen-pal. Out of shame, they use a picture with a handsome Okita Sougo beating up Shinpachi to show Shinpachi's face to Urara.
However, it is later revealed that his pen-pal is not the out-going, beautiful girl as shown in the photo, but her shy elder sister Kirara. Kirara offers to help Shinpachi to date Urara after knowing the truth about the photo, but it is too late as Urara is already enslaved by Okita. Out of guilt and embarrassment, Kirara plans to jump off a building.
Shinpachi and Gintoki go separately to look for Kirara. Shinpachi realizes the truth midway in the chase, but he fails to find Kirara. Gintoki and the Shinsengumi on the other hand successfully track Kirara and save her from jumping off. While Kirara is depressed with the current situation, Shinpachi arrives at the building opposite to them and writes on a sketchbook to communicate with Kirara. Upon telling her real name to Shinpachi, they resume being pen-pals again.
Sadaharu is feeling bad so they take him to a veterinary. By doing an X-Ray, a human hand-shaped shadow is found in his stomach. Gintoki and Shinpachi take the doll away while Kagura notices on other inhabitants in the veterinary.
Then, a client calls them to the hospital and wants them to find their father. While they are on their way, Katsura appears and tells Gintoki everything about Kintarou. Katsura requests to ride on his bike, but they just give Katsura the doll and leave.
While the cats are targeting Kintarou, Gintoki accidentally hits them with his bike and wonders if he has done something. Shinpachi tells him that he definitely hits something.

Shinpachi and Kagura stay together with Hinowa and Seita as they wait for Gintoki and Tsukuyo to return. Hinowa is happy and thankful for them seeing how Tsukuyo can relax, can act as an ordinary girl when with them, and can act stupidly in which Shinpachi wonders if it is a compliment or an insult. Hinowa also tells them Tsukuyo's past revealing the reason behind Tsukuyo's resolve on giving up her womanhood.

As an ironic twist, Gintoki states Shinpachi is being infected as well and hits him. It appears that this kind of parasite loves to feed on their host's motivation, and (therefore) the only one left unaffected is actually Gintoki.

The Amanto alliance army attacks with the aid of 3 infamous mercenary tribes: Dakini, Shinra and Yato.
As Gengai, Tama and Kintoki resurrect and fire the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon, a type of nano-robot is being spread and electronic weapons are deactivated by it. Shinpachi and others continue to fight their opponents, while their allies also appear one by one including the Shinsengumi, Nobume, Jirouchou and Pirako, the Diviners and Gedoumaru, Hedoro, the WItches, Kamui, Abuto and their Yatos and so on. As the amanto alliance is losing the battle, Utsuro opens up the doors to Earth's Atlantas and sends his zombie Naraku warriors to fight with them.
Gintama The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yoruzuya[edit | edit source]
The second Gintama movie shows a grown-up, 21 years old Shinpachi. He is now a better swordsman, his hair grows a bit, is more serious, and wears a black outfit (in reference to Gintoki's black shirt and pants). He also inherits Gintoki's bokuto. 5 years after Gintoki's disappearance, Shinpachi aims to protect what is left of Edo (without Kagura) and starts his own odd job business, as to follow Gintoki's footsteps. He has abandoned his interest in Otsu, forgotten the need of friends, and ceases to do Tsukkomi.
He meets a baffled Gintoki when the latter is being taunted by a group of gangsters with Mohawk hairstyles. Shinpachi cannot recognize Gintoki as Gintoki has got a mole stuck onto him to distort his outlook when others look at him. Gintoki is extremely surprised by his maturation and is brought back to the original Yorozuya. Shinpachi remains silent while Kagura does most of the explanation.
They then save Katsura and Kondou from the execution. Shinpachi pays a visit to his sister, who is in the grave clinical state due to the white curse. Shinpachi, Kagura and Gintoki vow to start Yorozuya again in front of Otae. They go on to investigate Enmi, who is in turn defeated by Gintoki. As Gintoki needs to travel back in time to set things right, Shinpachi and Kagura, realizing that Gintoki has been with them all along try to stop Gintoki with no avail.
After Gintoki's disappearance, Shinpachi and Kagura wander in the street, just to see a universe that Gintoki has never existed. Distraught, they try their best not to forget Gintoki. That fails as well, but Tama comes into the scene and brings back their memories after recorded them for 15 years.
With their memories back, Shinpachi and others travel back in time to help Gintoki. They fight their way through the Amanto and Enmi armies. Shinpachi and Kagura give a critical hit to Enmi but are then captured by their opponent. Luckily Joui four come to the rescue and finish off Enmi once and for all.
Since Enmi vanishes, Gintoki is no longer infected so the future is rewritten again. Tama explains that because of that, they will cease to exist in the current universe. The Yorozuya makes a promise to meet each other again in the new timeline, and they disappear one by one. As Shinpachi's glasses also vanishes, the remaining of Shinpachi is left in the Joui years, to his dismay.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- When the characters of Gintama were being made, Shinpachi was originally going to be a part of the Shinsengumi as Nagakura Shinpachi (永倉新八), who was the captain of the Shinsengumi's second unit. Instead, he was given glasses and became the one to throw the punch lines, receiving his last name from Shimura Ken (志村けん), a Japanese comedian.
- A recurring running gag for Shinpachi's glasses which other characters concerned the glasses itself is Shinpachi, which mostly makes the owner of the glasses being irritated due the presence of the real Shinpachi was ignored.
- Stated in the series, the name, Shinpachi can be a pun of Chimpanzee and Sympathy.
- Whenever Makoto, the 'Centaur' character/mascot played by Gintoki with Kagura as a corpse makes an appearance, Shinpachi is the hindquarters of the horse (for example Episode 124).
- The name of his okama counterpart and his gender-bend version is Pachie.
- The name of his magical girl counterpart in his own version of the Gintama ending is Magical Yun Yun Pachina.
- In Episode 106 of the Gintama anime he was portrayed as a horse with eye-glasses while the others were shown as warriors on horses.
- Shinpachi's name contains "Hachi" which means 8, which also means infinite or glasses (he wore glasses). He also placed on 8th rank in all the Gintama character polls to date (4 in total).
- Until now fans created 'Shinsengumi' version of him along with Hijikata Toushirou, Kondou Isao, and Okita Sougo.
- In Episode 241, it's said that Shinpachi looks similar to Sakaguchi Daisuke, who plays the character himself.
- For unknown reasons in the Dekobokko arc, while all the characters (except for his sister, Otae) had their genders changed, Shinpachi had his frame changed from blue to pink instead.
Quotes[edit | edit source]
- (To Shimura Tae) "You're so unfair, Sis... Smiling brightly every single day, but you never show your true feelings in the slightest. Even if you're hurt or want to cry, you're forcing yourself to smile. Always without saying anything to anyone. You bear the burden alone, you decide alone and you end up smiling alone! Please stop forcing yourself! If you're hurt, then tell us! I won't let you say you're alone! Because we all... Because we saw your crying face... We all gathered here for that one reason alone! Those guys would rather die than say it was for your sake! But you know, when you cry... there are others that share your pain! Please remember that!
- (To Shimura Tae) "Sister... Sister... Sister! It doesn't matter if two years have passed! I can go anywhere as long as I'm with you!"
- (To loan shark amanto) "I don't care about the dojo. I love the dojo where my sister laughed, if it only makes her cry, then I don't need that kind of dojo!"
- (To Daraku) "This is the Samurai Country, you guys get the hell out of here!"
- (To Goemon) "Do you still call yourself human? You're mother is a XX!!!"
- ( To Terakado Tsuu) "Scandal or not, we'll never stop being your fans."
- (To Banzou along with Kagura) "If you want to shoot then go ahead and shoot, whether Edo burns or what ever that has nothing to do with me! But if you shoot this person, it'll be a problem."
- (To Sakata Gintoki along with Kagura) "Without you saying, we're already living how we wanted to. We're here because we wanted to. We're with you because we wanted to!"
- (To Sakata Gintoki and Kagura) "If you want to say that I am a SinCon that's fine. I love my sister, i don't want to leave her, i want to stay with her always but...if she's going to leave with a man she truly loves, whether that man's lazy and always late playing his rent, or a gorilla stalker, a crazy mayo addict, a sadistic freak, madao, or a guy with hemorrhoids, as long as she's happy that's okay."
- (To Sakata Gintoki and Kagura)"If I have to see my sister cry like that, I can't just do nothing. I just want to see her smiling always, I guess that's sibling for you"
- (To Sakata Gintoki) "Just so you know, I'll always be at Yoruzuya, so you can think of me as a family."
- (To Tama) "Living without protecting what needs to be protected, is the same as death to a samurai."
- (To Sakata Gintoki) "Aren't you supposed to be Sakata Gintoki? The man who's let so much slip away, who's failed to protect so much...but swore that he would never run away from his responsibilities! Didn't you promise her husband? Once you've decided to protect something, you'll protect it to the very end! Isn't that what makes you Sakata Gintoki?! So what if Otose-san's life was in danger? This isn't enough to kill Otose-san off! Isn't enough to kill us off! Isn't enough to kill you off! Because you're going to protect us! Because we're going to protect you! Isn't that what Yorozuya is about? Isn't that how the three of us protected so much over the years?
Movie[edit | edit source]
- (To Gintoki) " If you're in this planet for tourism, you're either have real guts or a complete moron. If you don't want to die, go home. Country bumpkin or thug, I'm not letting anyone else make things worse in this town. But if you people think that wearing a mask can protect you from the white plague, maybe you are the dumb ones."
- (To Kagura) " Talking about it won't change what happened. No matter how much we want it back, those days are long gone. The job he left behind. I'm going to finish it. I'm going to stop the white plague!"
- (To Gintoki) " This is the world where we met him. I don't want to abandon the Yorozuya's homeworld or the fact that I worked here."
- (To Gintoki) " Are you goofing off the first thing in the morning? You haven't forgotten the promise you made with my sister and us have you?"
- (To Gintoki) " We kept them this whole time. As worthless as it might be, it was the last memory we had of him. We thought that one day, we'd have the complete set again. But now.. But now..! Why are you leaving again?! And we finally got to see you again! You're going to leave us, leave everyone behind and run off somewhere?! Gin-san!"
- (To Gintoki along with Kagura) " You created a peaceful future, and we're going to wreck it. You gave your life to protect our future, but we chose... To bring you back to that future!"
