Lesson 526 is the 526th chapter of the Gintama series.
Hijikata was shown running on the street towards a crowd the riverside, where Kondo's head was displayed. It turned out to be a nightmare as a result of Hijikata sleeping during a stakeout with Haji.
According to the "hard-boiled" detective, Hijikata had been working for him and Haji. As soon as Nobu Nobu was enthroned, the former Shogun's followers either got executed, lost their jobs or were demoted to minor positions. In addition, as soon as the Shinsengumi was dissolved, all of its members were split up.
In a flashback when Kondou was arrested by the Mimawarigumi, Gintoki asked what was happening. In reply, Nobume asked him if he wanted to oppose them on behalf of the absent Shinsengumi members, teasing him for feeling sympathetic with Kondou. She believed that Kondou had sent his surbodinates to guard the Shogun's funeral so that they would not oppose the Mimawarigumi when he was arrested, thus avoiding them being executed as traitors.
Upon returning the Shinsengumi's headquarter, the members fought against the guarding Mimawarigumi with a shocked Okita and Hijikata watching them. Much to their surprise, Gintoki walked out of there and apologized to them. That evening, the Shinsengumi agreed to save Kondou at any price, yet Hijikata gave up and left, following Kondou's words.
Later, Hijikata stood before the now-sealed doors of the Shinsengumi's headquarter and cried, which he denied by asking if it was raining. Sitting on a bench, Okita commented on how rough of being homeless.
