Lesson 386 is the 386th chapter of the Gintama series.

Story

Somewhere in Yoshiwara, a young woman told her customer that she envied the moon. The man told her to meet again in front of the cherry blossom tree when the next full moon arrived. As the man promised to see her again, the two exchanged their vows with their strands of hair tying to each other's finger.

The scene cut to Gintoki, Tsukuyo and Hinowa as they talked about the legendary courtesan Suzuran. It is said that her beauty and talents had gained her popularity, which might even surpassed Hinowa's. Now, Suzuran had invited Gintoki over to thank him for saving Yoshiwara. He then nervously waited for her in his bed (much to Tsukuyo's annoyance.)

However, Suzuran turned out to be an extremely old woman. She claimed to have been a courtesan before Yoshiwara was brought underground. Despite her efforts to serve Gintoki properly, she ended up having a seizure and was brought into the tatami room. Before leaving, Suzuran stated that Gintoki was a good man, worrying a tayuu much older than himself. She tied a strand of her hair to his finger, promising that they would see each other in the next time the moon appears.

Hinowa thanked Gintoki for helping Suzuran die as a courtesan. It was said that in Yoshiwara a long time ago, the courtesans used to take pledges of mutual love by tying their hair to their customers' fingers. According to Hinowa, a courtesan must retired at the age of 30, yet Suzuran still wanted to maintain her job, and spent her last days as a courtesan. Obviously, she had made a promise with someone in the past and been waiting for him to return up to now.

While looking for informations, the Yorozuya learnt that Suzuran used to have many retainers of the Shogun as her customers, until a rumour spread over Yoshiwara that she was an interest of the previous Shogun.
