The Hijikata family was lead by a patriarch who was a rich farmer. He had a mistress who gave birth to Toushirou. He presumably had a wife who was the father of his other children. When he died Toushirou's existence was revealed and he was absorbed into the family. As the oldest child Tamegorou became the new head of the family. The family was attacked by bandits which lead to Tamegorou being blinded and Toushirou mutilating the bandits. The other siblings, scared by Toushirou's actions shunned him leading to him running away. At some point Tamegorou got married. There seem to be at least three unnamed Hijikata children who were younger than Tamegorou and older than Toushiro.
