Introduction[]

Gintoki has a duty to fulfill as a student of Shoka Sonjuku. The paths taken by Gintoki and Takasugi in the last two years finally converge... can they save their teacher this time?

Plot[]

On the ship, Takasugi asked Gintoki how he found out that Utsuro was still alive. Gintoki explains that Utsuro was born from Altana and it would be no surprise if he was reborn after throwing himself into an Altana gate. He recounts Utsuro's last words about they can no longer save their teacher, Yoshida Shouyou.

Gintoki asked the priestesses for the locations of the Altana gates across Japan, hoping to discover clues on Utsuro's whereabouts. He travels to a gate by the sea and speaks to the priest guarding over the gate, who tells the silver-haired samurai that they found a baby in the waters, who bore a striking resemblance to Shouyou. Gintoki tried to put an end the baby's life but could not bear to do so. He decided to raise the child and watched as he rapidly grew into a young boy. The boy quietly followed Gintoki around, without saying a single word or expressing any desires.

One day, the boy slipped off a cliff and Gintoki catches him before he fell. He chastises the boy for not calling for help and wonders out loud if this was what his teacher felt back then while caring for a young Gintoki. The boy replied coolly that he was a better behaved than Gintoki, who asks if the boy was indeed a reincarnation of Shouyou. The boy reveals that he has memories of his past lives but that he remembers Shouyou most clearly after spending time with Gintoki.

The two are attacked by Naraku soldiers; the boy pushes Gintoki off the cliff to protect him from their swords. The boy pulls his heart out and entrusts it to Gintoki, telling the man that he and Utsuro cannot be left to roam free in the world. The boy becomes unconscious and is captured by the soldiers.

Back on the ship, Gintoki tells Takasugi that the remnants of the Naraku must have been trying to bring Utsuro back but Shouyou prevented them from doing so. Despite wandering around for two years trying to save Shouyou, Gintoki said that Shouyou was the one who saved him once again in the end. Takasugi asks Gintoki the kind of salvation he was after; if he wanted to put an end to Utsuro like Shouyou wished, then why was he carrying his heart around like a precious treasure? He wonders if Gintoki's resolve was wavering, or if wanted to return the heart to Utsuro's body and take a gamble on whether Utsuro or Shouyou would appear this time. Gintoki was enraged by Takasugi's statements but Takasugi explains that the child's body was still alive; he was held in an inanimate state, which was more convenient for the people controlling the Naraku. Before he could complete his story, Takasugi coughs out blood, prompting Gintoki to ask what happened to Takasugi's body.

Two years ago on SS Heavenly Bird, a mortally wounded Takasugi entered the room where the Tendoushuu was held to destroy their bodies and to put an end to Utsuro's bloodline. Takasugi hallucinates one of the Tendoushuu's faces becoming Utsuro's, telling him that he had already sown his seeds across the country. Before he could kill the Tendoushuu, members of the Altana Liberation Army stab him and retrieve the bodies. Takasugi was unable to accept the fact that he would die before he could put an end to the cycle of suffering caused by Utsuro. In order to gain more time, he stabbed himself in the heart with Oboro's ashes which contained Shouyou's blood; Takasugi carried with him the ashes because of his promise to return Oboro to Earth. Takasugi wakes up later with his wounds fully healed.

Back in present day, at Nobu Nobu's grave, Shijaku said to Katsura that he has done all he can in the past two years to ensure humans and Amantos did not make the same mistake as they did. However, they had overlooked something crucial two years ago. Massive terrorist attacks were happening across the universe, with a huge amount of Altana stolen each time. The attacks were carried out by residents linked to a religious group that worships immortality. The religion, which sprouted when some Altana Liberation Army soldiers obtained immortal blood from the Tendoushuu bodies, spread widely and quickly as people were desperately seeking out ways to restore their loved ones lost during the war. The remnants of the Tendoushuu has since gained massive power and Utsuro's heart and body was the last piece of the puzzle to unlock the secret to mastering all-encompassing immortality.

Takasugi tells Gintoki that his body's regenerative abilities have weakened and he did not have much time left. He had spent the last two years pursuing the group and had the same goal as Gintoki. He believes that Shouyou and Gintoki have suffered long enough; if Gintoki wished to save Shouyou from his cursed fate, Takasugi would accompany him to save what they did not manage to back then. Takasugi reveals that the group's next target is Edo and the two return to the city.

Katsura and Shikaju are attacked by the group, and Katsura tells the Amanto and the reason he took up the position of prime minister was to influence and control the cabinet, so as to pick up and prepare for any trails that led to Utsuro. However, the enemy turns out to be Okita and his men, who end up chasing after Shijaku.

Shinpachi and Kagura wonder what their next move should be, after hearing from Sougo that Utsuro was still alive. Sougo requested for their help to find Gintoki but Shinpachi believes that Gintoki has already made his move. Shinpachi wishes to meet Gintoki again.
