Introduction[]
Plot[]
Shinpachi and Sougo exchange blows until a member of Sougo's gang interrupts their fight. Shinpachi notices that his gang consists of most of the ex-Shinsengumi members, including Shimaru. Sougo explains that while the original Shinsengumi was disbanded, they were reborn as a group that exterminates anyone who threatens Japan's peace, otherwise known as the mafia. Kanna remarks that Sougo is not terrifying and the two begin to fight.
Gintoki is searching for Takasugi in the village. He spots someone who was dressed like Takasugi but he turns out to be Takechi in disguise. Takechi and Matako have been searching for Takasugi for the last two years. Gintoki assures them that the ex-Kiheitai leader is still alive but is pursuing his own goals; he tells the two not to follow him as their presence would force him to stop his pursuit. Gintoki thinks back to how he left the Yoruzuya behind to chase after his own goal as well.
Gintoki senses the presence of his enemies and jumps off the bridge. He is attacked by a arrows and chased by a group of assailants. He falls off a boat and yells for help, revealing late in the anime that he did not know how to swim. Takechi and Matako are ambushed as well but Takasugi kills the man. He helps Gintoki fend off the assailants and threatens the silver-haired samurai to drown him if he did not hand over what he had in his pocket. The assailants were revealed to be Naraku soldiers who were after the object that Gintoki was holding on to. At the mouth of the river, they are confronted by more Naraku soldiers and the two fight the soldiers together while bickering over who could keep the object safe.
Meanwhile, Hijikata and his men help to evacuate the village residents. Yamazaki reports that the casualties were mostly Naraku soldiers defeated by two samurai, which Hijikata believes must be Takasugi and Gintoki. Takasugi reveals that he has already stolen the object from Gintoki while they were fighting underwater and escapes to his ship offshore.
Back at the pier, Sougo and Kanna continue their fight. Sougo shared that they needed Gintoki's help in case an enemy they could not fight showed up. Kanna responds that she did not come to Edo to bring the Yoruzuya back together. Sougo threatens to kill Kanna and Shinpachi to draw Kagura's attention, but Sougo notices that Kanna is actually a smaller version of Kagura. Kanna grows in size and beats Sougo up but he throws a grenade at her.
Kagura explains to Shinpachi that she travelled to different planets to find ways to turn her beloved dog back to normal. But the harsh environments of the planets turned her body into that of an elderly woman. After waking up from a short slumber and regaining youthful appearance, she tells Shinpachi that she did not manage to save Sadaharu and was embarrassed to return to Edo. Shinpachi tells her that the Yoruzuya did not disband because of her; Gintoki would probably have disappeared even if she stayed. Sougo said that Gintoki must have known all along that he was still alive.
From his ship, Takasugi apologises to Takechi and Matako as he believes that they would part ways forever. Gintoki manages to get on Takasugi's ship and asks Takasugi to return the object he stole which turns out to be...red bean mochi. But Takasugi is aware that Gintoki was holding on to something else...Yoshida Shouyou's heart.
