Introduction[]

The battle against the Liberation Army concludes for Takasugi, Sakamoto and Katsura, but intensifies for the Yorozuya and the others back on Earth.

Plot[]

Takasugi manages to defeat Enshou, who tells the Kiheitai leader to finish him off, along with his hatred and sorrow. Takasugi spares Enshou and tells him to live the rest of his life with his pain and suffering as an ordinary man. He admits that like Enshou, he was drowning in the sins he had committed.

Nobu Nobu asks both sides to stand down; as burdened as they are with their sins and sorrow, they had to live on. Sakamoto, Katsura and the other samurai drop their guns and swords. Enshou agrees to help stop the SS Heavenly Bird from crashing; the hopeful look in Nobu Nobu's eyes reminds Enshou of that of his wife's. However, one of the soldiers shoots Enshou from behind, furious that their admiral was giving up on the war now, after so many of their comrades have died for his sake. The bullets pass through Enshou and hit Nobu Nobu, who falls to the ground. The army grabs and pins down the soldier, but Nobu Nobu tells them to forgive him. Nobu Nobu said that he was responsible for starting the war and that he felt obligated to take the shots; his people would suppress their hatred and end the war. Sakamoto calls for medical assistance but his men reply that the medics were preoccupied with treating Mutsu and Elizabeth on Nobu Nobu's orders. Nobu Nobu told Sakamoto that he has always expected his life to end this way, since he killed Shige Shige to take his place. He hoped that by laying down his life, he could put an end to the war.

Sakamoto retorts that the war was not over yet; Nobu Nobu's death would make them look like fools who let their king die twice. Nobu Nobu was surprised that Sakamoto referred to him as their king and Katsura responds that he was definitely their king when he fought alongside them to protect their country. Nobu Nobu smiles and replies that their country no longer needed a king; they were already fighting for the kings within their own hearts. He thanks them for giving him a meaningful life, by allowing him to become their shogun for a brief moment. He sees Shige Shige in the light and walks towards him, ushering in a new era without kings. As the two shoguns disappear into the light, they look back with a smile, believing that the the future would be in the good hands of the countless kings inheriting the country.

Back in Edo, Utsuro notices that someone is quelling the surge of the ley lines. The priestesses Ane and Mone call Matsudaira to inform him that they would drive around to subdue to the Altana outbursts to reclaim their clan's control of the gates, and tells him to gather his men to defeat the Naraku soldiers at the terminal.

Kamui brings a injured Gintoki to Kagura and Shinpachi, revealing that he kicked the silver-haired samurai out of the way before he could attack Utsuro. Sougo shows up to lecture Gintoki for being rash and losing sight of the situation earlier. Gintoki and Shinpachi recognise that the surge damanged most of Edo and caused many casualties. Abuto and the Yato rescue Gengai, who reveals that his nanomachine virus have been deactivated and Edo is now defenseless against the Altana Liberation Army. However, Takasugi radios Abuto and shares that the army has been dealt with in space, and it was Gintoki's turn to finish the fight off on Earth.

The priestesses notice that their Inugami Komako is weakened from the overuse of her powers; Komako hears Sadaharu howling in the distance and chases after him. Hijikata reveals to the Yoruzuya that Sadaharu and the priestesses were using their abilities to hold back the Altana surges, but they had to hurry up to the terminal before it was too late. The Yoruzuya and Kamui rush towards the terminal, and Princess Soyo calls Kagura to apologise for not keeping a closer watch on Sadaharu. Nobume responds that both Sadaharu and Nobu Nobu made their own choice to lay down their lives for the country. Nobume entrusts Princess Soyo to the Yagyuu family and leaves to fight the Naraku soldiers nearby.

The Yoruzuya and Kamui are ambushed by the immortal Naraku soldiers. They attack Kagura but Kamui acts as her shield, stating that they needed her alive to make the big rabbit show up. The big rabbit turns out to be Umibouzu, who together with Nobume, have joined the fight. He has returned from the dead to repay Utsuro for what he did to him and fires his umbrella at the Naraku. He wonders who would be the last one standing in the fight, but steps on Kamui's head and yells at him to die right now.
